Summary: The report provides:

  • a description of vocational education and training (VET) programs in Australia
  • an overview of the characteristics of those who participate
  • best practice indicators
  • strengths and weaknesses of current VET offerings in NSW government schools
  • recommendations to the department for strengthening VET programs.

This report contains a review of published research, policy documents, analyses using national and NSW enrolment and survey data sets, as well as an analysis of data gathered using interviews and focus group discussions. The report finds that VET delivered to secondary students in NSW plays a role in engaging and retaining students and in preparing them for the labour market. However, both these roles are constrained in particular ways. The report makes 18 recommendations for improving access and participation, industry relevance and quality of VET progams in NSW.
